Western Ghats in Tirunelveli
district. Nine waterfalls, Penaruvi, Shitarruvi, Pazhathottaruvi
add charm to this place. It is believed that the waters
of Courtalam have medicinal properties as they run
through a forest of herbs. Silver Cascade is the famed
waterfall in Kodaikkanal.
Guindy national park : black buck,
spotted deer, civet cats, jackals, mongoose and various
species of monkeys. There is a separate snake park

Sanctuary :It is one of the most
spectacular water bird breeding grounds in India.
Cormorants, egrets, herons, storks, spoonbills, grebes,
barters and gray pelicans come here
to breed and nest for six months (October-March) depending on the monsoon season.
Calimere Wildlife Sanctuary : a coastal sanctuary, 90 kilometers south
east of Thanjavur, juts out into the Palk Strait.
It is noted for the vast flocks of migratory waterfowl,
especially flamingos.
Mundanthurai Tiger sanctuary :It is principally a tiger sanctuary. But Sambar, Chital and the rare lion tailed
macaque also live in this sanctuary. Best time to visit this sanctuary is between
January and December.
KERALA
Wildlife :The bounty of god’s own country doesn’t
stop with her green pastures, beaches and backwaters.
Kerala is also rich with a variety of wildlife. There
are numerous wildlife reserves situated within the state, which offer a unique
travel experience to every visitor who visit them.
Kerala's wildlife sanctuaries are home to some of the highly endangered species
of flora and fauna. The main wildlife sanctuaries in Kerala include Periyar
Wildlife Sanctuary, Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary and Thekkady Bird Sanctuary.
The well maintained wildlife sanctuaries and national parks of Kerala are teeming
with exotic wildlife.
Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary :Chinnar
Wildlife Sanctuary is a thorny shrub forest with
xerophytes. Dry deciduous forests and wet grasslands
are home for Elephants, Spotted Deer, Sambhar,
Hanuman monkey and even Peacocks. Declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 1984,
it is spread over an area of 90,422 sq. kms. The rocky terrain with wobbly
patches adds to the scenic splendor of the sanctuary. The main attractions
of Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary are Elephants, Gaurs, Panthers, Spotted Deer,
Sambhars, Grizzled Giant Squirrels, Hanuman Langurs, Peacocks, Star Tortoises
and Travancore evening browns. Located in the rainshadow area of the Western
Ghats, unlike other sanctuaries, Chinnar has only 48 rainy days in a year.
Eravikulam Wildlife Sanctuary : Eravikulam Wildlife Sanctuary was put up for the protection of the rare Nilgiri
Tahr. The beautiful undulating grasslands present a view of natural beauty
that’s untarnished and wonderful. Anamudi, the highest peak south of
Himalayas is among the prides of this sanctuary. The Atlas Moth, largest
of its kind in the world, is an exclusive possession of the park. The sanctuary
was declared as a National Park in 1978. The park is inhabited by Elephants,
Sambhars, Gaurs, Lion-tailed Macaque, Nilgiri Langur, Tigers and Leopards.
KARNATAKA
Wildlife : Constituted in 1955, Nagarahole Game Sanctuary
comprises of forests, which was once the exclusive
hunting reserve of the erstwhile Maharajas of Mysore.
Sprawling over an area of 6733 sq. kilometers Nagarhole
game sanctuary has a wide variety of birds and animals.
The Nagarahole Park in the northwest and the Madumalai
Sanctuary of Kerala in the southwest flank the Bandipur
National Park. Peacock, deer and Elephants are some
of the major attractions in Bandipur National Park
while traveling through this park.
The Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary comprises a group
of six islets on the River Kaveri. The waters of
the Krishna Raja Sagar Reservoir surround the islets.
Many birds including the Little and Large cormorant,
the Night heron, Snake Bird, White ibis, Great Stone
Plovers, spoon bills, Lesser Whistling Teals can
be sighted here.
Jog falls :
the highest waterfall in India. The River Sharavati falls at a depth of 292
meters here, in four separate cascades referred to as Raja, Rani, Roarer and
Rocket.The falls at their striking best during the months June to November.
This is an ideal spot for adventure tourism and water sports.
Shivasamuderam (Mandya dist.) :river
Cauvery cascades down in two picturesque waterfalls.
Falling down from a height of 75 meters into a deep
rocky gorge, these falls are best during
the monsoons. 1.5 kilometers away is Asia's first hydro-electric project
set up in 1905.
Hebbe Falls : water gushes down from a height of 168 meters in two stages. The Kalhatti Falls
are 10 kilometers from Kemmanagundi. The water here cascades down a height
of 122 meters. There is also a local temple here, constructed in a gap between
rocks.
Shivaganga Falls :140 kilometers
away, amidst scenic surroundings, the river Souda
falls into a deep valley from a height of 74 meters
to form the Shivaganga Falls.
Magod Falls : a scenic delight, the Bedti River plunders into a 180 rocky valley in two leaps.
Lalguli Falls, The Mailmane Falls , Abbey Falls, Iruppu Falls are other minor
waterfalls.
ANDRAPRADESH
The Nehru Zoological Park, near the Mir Alam Tank,
in Hyderabad is a natural habitat, supporting a teeming
wildlife population. It has to its credit the first
lion safari park of South Asia.The Pakkal, Tadvai
and Ethurnagaram sanctuaries abound in tiger, panther,
wild boar, jackal, fox, gaur, wild dog and the sloth
bear. The Kolleru Lake situated 95 km from Amravati,
is a haven for migratory birds. A little beyond 8
km lies Aredu, India's largest pelicanry, a favourite
haunt of migratory birds.
Kawak Wildlife Sanctuary : The prominent animals here are the sloth bear, deer, antelope and leopard.
Nagarjunasagar
Srisailam Sanctuary -- The largest Tiger Reserve. The deciduous forests harbor
a wide variety of fauna - like the tiger, leopard, sloth bear, hyena, jungle
cat, palm civet, bonnet macaque and the pangolin.
